because I don't think there were that many complicated thoeries when he created his evolutional theory. He must have seen similarities, if you look the illustrations of his theory you will see the same features progressing form generation to generation but with change that shows their relation and similarity. It's like physical traits from your parents but they are somehow changed to suit your build and structure.
